Zaanse Schans is a small Dutch village on the Zaan River, 25 km away from Amsterdam, where all the country’s traditions and customs have been preserved, where people wear national costumes, houses are painted by hand and look like gingerbread cookies. Where delicious Dutch cheese is cooked according to old recipes, exclusively by hand.
For those visiting Holland it is a must to come to this place. In the XVII-XVIII centuries there were more than a thousand windmills standing along the Zaanriver. Now there are only six, but they are all functional.
Zaanse Schans is a museum where it is impossible to single out one or several exhibits: there are about 30 varieties of houses from the 16th and 17th centuries exhibited here, old bakeries and cattle paddocks, in general, all the delights of the provincial life of medieval Holland.
An excellent souvenir from this folklore area will be wooden clomps – the national shoes of the Dutch. Here in Zaans there is a wooden shoes factory – these shoes are very useful for the health of the lower limbs and spine.
The village is a charming combination of the history and the beauty of local landscapes that create a feeling of actual time travel.
