It seems that you have found the most cozy and peaceful place on earth!
The village of Giethoorn in Holland has a truly remarkable feature – they don’tmove by car or bus, there are almost no roads in the village – only canals. Therefore, the main transport is boats, and thanks to that, the second name of the village is the Dutch Venice. Hence the unique atmosphere of silence, coziness and complete relaxation. Peace and slow pace of the life of a usual Dutch village of the 18th century are in the air.
The history of the village begins in 1230, when a group of refugees from the south of the country found this place. The only thing that caught their eye was the huge amount of goat’s horns that remained after a violent flood. This is the secret of the village’s name – “goat horns”.
The houses in this village are mostly located on the islets and are connected by wooden bridges – over 50 of those in total!
Almost all the houses in the village have thatched rooves – marshy areas provide residents with a lot of reeds. Previously, only rich people could afford a tiled roof and people were mostly using straw, now there’s the opposite situation: the thatched roof is more expensive.
If you want something truly special, then you should definitely visit this wonderful village!
