Alkmaar (cheese market)

The city of Alkmaar in the north of Holland is known for its developed cheese production and annual cheese fairs.

They begin on every second Friday of April and last until the second Friday of September. The fair in Alkmaar begins with the traditional cheese weighing ritual. Enormous circles of cheese get weighed on old scales, which, same as the city itself, are over 750 years old.

The market opens with the bell tower’s ringing, called in by a specially invited important guest or a well-known person. After the opening, the inspectors check the quality of the cheese, and then it is put up for auction.

If the agreement is achieved, the cheese is brought to a weight room, where it gets carefully weighed. All actions are performed in strict accordance with the rituals and look very spectacular, and thanks to that, attract thousands of tourists to the city.

In addition to the fair, you will see many other attractions of the “capital of cheese”!
