Aachen

Germany is remarkable for its location in the center of Europe. Several of its cities are located at the junction of the borders of three countries. One of such cities is Aachen: the lands of Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands connect here.

Today it is a quiet residential city, but once it was the place where the German kingswere crowned. Aachen was the famous winter residence of Charlemagne, the Roman emperor, who still rests here, in the impressive cathedralthat he built.

Nowadays Aachen is a pleasant mix of historical greatness and modern innovationsin architecture.

Residential chambers, ballrooms, galleries for art collections, town hall, a school and even two swimming pools – indoor and outdoor,were built by the order of Charlemagne. Aachen Cathedral, included today in the list of UNESCO monuments, isn’t only amazing with its magnificent view: it was built in full accordance with the biblical canons.

In Aachen, there are several interesting museums. The collection of theZurmondt-Ludwigmuseum has a significant amount of medieval sculptures (XII – XVI centuries), paintings of late Gothic, Baroque, Romanticism and classical modernism.
