Liege is the capital of the Belgian province with the same name, and the main city of its metropolitan area.
Liege can be considered the cultural capital of Wallonia, despite the fact that officially it is Namur. And although the city is known mainly for its past industrial development, today it still has a rich, colorful history and culture.
The population of Liege is about 200 000 people. It is located not far from the state border and from the Dutch city of Maastricht and the German city of Aachen.
The city gained its significance during the Middle Ages, when it was the capital of the Liege Bishopric.
It actively developed in the 19th century, and hence this, it became one of the first industrialized regions in the world outside the United Kingdom.
The city center is a fairly interesting combination of historical areas with buildings of the 1960s and 70s, as well as 19th-century buildings.
