Marken – the former isle

We invite you on an unforgettable walk along the picturesque Dutch peninsula – Marken.

In the distant thirteenth year, violent storm waves separated the territory of Marken from the mainland and turned it into an island. For a long time this distinctive fishing village has been developing in isolation from the Netherlands. And so even today, Marken keeps its own ancient national customs and traditions. A walk through this charming village grants a sense of being in an old Dutch fairy tale.

The population of Marken is small – only 2,000 people. The people of Marchen are rightfully proud of their fairy-tale houses, traditionally painted in dark green. Each of these lovely houses is surrounded by a fence and has its own well-kept garden. It seems that the skillful villagers compete with each other in decorating their dwellings.

Residents of the city lead a calmand measured way of life and are happy to introduce the tourists to the peculiarities of their national life. A special pride of the people of the city is caused by their national costumes – the famous cloaks and colorful skirts in combination with corsets.

And of course, you will certainly be pleasedby local fish dishes. The locals have been engaged in fishing for an insanely long period in history and are constantly improvingtheis skills of cooking fish dishes. Marken’sherring smokehouse is recognized as the best in Holland!

Marken instantly captivates the tourists with its calming atmosphere and the rare opportunity to have a break from modern megacities.
