Red Lights district

The Red Lights district is the Mecca of the world’s sex industry. This district in Amsterdam is the place where the most notorious sex shops, erotic theaters and brothels of Europe are located. The tempting red lights glowing in the windows of the establishments here gave the district its name. This place is truly legendary.

In Amsterdam, as in any other big seaport city, there was always demand for “free love”. Miserable for women’s attention, sailors used to leave nearly all of their salary in such places.

Today the red lights district resolves the problem of prostitution with Eropean pragmatism. The law in the Netherlands punishes sexual harassment strictly; meanwhile, whatever is going on behind the doors of brothels is private life, intervention in which is unacceptable. Clients only pay for the room’s rent, all the other things they get is just pleasant pastime by mutual consent.

Besides brothels, there’s a lot of other sex-related establishments in the Red Lights district. Sex shops, erotic theaters, the Sex museum, and on top of that, coffeeshops.

If you decide to visit this unique oasis of free love, do not forget: it’s strictly forbidden to photograph the ladies here!
