Fishing village Volendam

We invite you for a walk to the old fishing village Volendamon the shore of Lake Markermeer. This lake was previously part of lake Ijsselmeer that was created artificially by a barrier dam that divided the North Sea and the Great Gulf.

The view of the village with an open sea harbor and a labyrinth of fishing houses remains unchanged for many years. Visit the local church built in 1658, and the famous fish auction with a rich assortment of delicious fresh fish, located in the center of Volendam.

The atmosphere of Volendamwill fascinate you at first sight.

Residents of the village are rightfully proud of their colorful national costumes. By the way, in separate souvenir shops you can not only purchase such suit, but also take a picture in it.

For a long time Volendam was known as a popular place among Impressionists, which is not surprising. The picturesque landscape and the enchanting atmosphere of the village inspired the maestrosof art. Be sure to visit theSpander hotel with its vast collection of 19-20 centuries’ canvases.

Wander through the ancient narrow streets of the village,enjoy its sea air and unique atmosphere. And, of course, order the famous smoked eel and try some delicious herring in a local fish restaurant.
