The city of Namur was founded on the site of the Celtic settlement by the Romans, who built a fortress here to protect their borders.
One of the main attractions of Namur is its Cathedral, named after Saint Aubin, built in 1767.
The Cathedral shelters an interesting relic – the heart of Don Juan of Austria. This naval commander spent his last years of life in the premises of Namur, and heis considered one of the most legendaryfigures of the city.
The largest structure of Namur is the Citadel. This is the name of the fortress in the center of the city, surrounded by walls, the process of building which stretched from the Middle Ages to the 19th century. The first mention of the Citadel refers to the 7th century.
A spacious parkis laid right next to the citadel – the favorite place of rest of the townspeople. There is also an observation tower thatoffers a beautiful view of Namur.
The visiting card of the city is its embankment. It stretches along the Sambreriver and offers its guests a beautiful view of the Namur Citadel.
Another significant construction of Namur is the main bridge of the city -Jamb, the first mention of which dates back to the 12th century.
